The Cold War was  a period of tension between the Soviet Union and the United States, also leading to tensions and conflict between countries allied with each one. While the USSR and the US were allied as well during WWII, after the victory, the alliance fell apart. There is no clear beginning and end, but it is suggested that this period spanned from 1947 to 1991, when the USSR was dissolved, putting a natural end to the tensions. While these two superpowers never engaged in a direct conflict, they did support regional conflicts and also faced significant tensions in regards to each nation’s nuclear arsenal. The lack of direct conflict is what gave this war the name “Cold”, and this was related to the doctrine of mutually assured destruction, as both countries had nuclear weapons that could be used against each other. In addition to the regional conflicts, there was a lot of competition in other areas, from the Space Race to sports events. Both countries engaged in technological development and military development as well. The Cold War was marked by large scale events like the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
